The Makah Tribe By:Rebecca

Once upon a time there was a girl named Alkas, she was from the Makah Tribe. The food chain was going bad so her tribe didn't have a lot of food for the winter. They would put up wooden fences in the stream to block the fish from getting away. In the summer they would have lots of food like whales, seals, and fish and small rodents like rabbits, foxes,and raccoon but, since it wasn't summer some of the people would die.  The climate was rainy and mild.

  There was so much rain that the crops would get flooded. Alkas' dad was going fish with a group of men. Alkas was so happy to see how many fish they would bring back.  Things didn't go that well because they came back.....WITH NO FISH! That was a big deal because that night they were having a feast.

  Alkas had a plan. She had heard that there was an ocean far away and all kinds of fish lived there. So that morning she escaped to find that ocean far away.  Alkas was going to get her tribe all the fish they needed.  There were so many hard times for Alkas. She had to climb tall mountains, sludge through mucky marshes, and hike through a long forest.

  Then, Alkas saw what she was waiting for the ocean! There were all kinds of different fish jumping out of the water. She saw orange fish, green fish, and silver fish.  Alkas was so happy that she couldn't wait to get home so she started to run home.  Finally, Alkas got home and everybody was so happy that they still got to have the feast.  The tribe was so happy because they were so hungry and they couldn't wait to eat.

 

Interesting Facts:

The Makah tribe spoke English and Nuxalk. For entertainment the Makah tribe would let people dance to show everyone their fancy beads on their clothes.  They lived in large houses that could hold up to 30 or 40 people.

 For culture, the Makah Tribe children are considered eagles and ravens.  They have great artistic expressions.  They believe the power of their god.  My tribe practiced different religions like pantheism and Christianity.  The Makahs ate whales, seals, fish, deer, elk, moose, and small rodents like rabbits, foxes, and raccoons.  They also ate some roots from different plants. 

Personal Choice:

I think the Makah tribe is interesting because usually houses can't hold that many people.  They must have had their whole clan living with them.  For me, that would be hard because it would be too crowded and I wouldn't have enough space of my own.

I like their food because usually you don't eat whale or moose or roots from plants.  I might want to try the whale or moose, but not the roots because if you have a root without a stream nearby, you'd be eating dirt.
